Hasahn French scored a game-high 21 points and Jordan Goodwin turned in a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead Saint Louis to a 71-49 exhibition victory over Missouri-St. Louis Thursday night at Chaifetz Arena.
Tramaine Isabell Jr. tallied 16 points for the Billikens, who outrebounded the Tritons 46-27. D.J. Foreman collected eight rebounds (four offensive). SLU hauled in 24 offensive boards that turned into 18 second-chance points.
SLU held UMSL to 36.4 percent shooting (16-of-44) from the floor. The teams combined for 52 turnovers, but the Billikens took greater advantage of the Tritons’ 28 miscues and outscored the visitors 32-11 in points off turnovers.
French was 10-of-14 from the floor and added six rebounds. Isabell’s 5-of-8 shooting performance included 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Nine of Goodwin’s 11 rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Saint Louis scored the first seven points and pulled out to a 19-3 lead with 8:20 left in the first half. UMSL stayed within striking distance by outscoring the Billikens 18-12 the rest of the half, and it was 31-21 SLU at intermission.
A 12-2 run gave the Billikens their first 20-point advantage, 43-23, with 15:13 remaining. UMSL scored the next six points to narrow the gap to 14, but that was as close as the Tritons would get.
Shane Wissink and Johnathan Matthews scored 14 points apiece to lead UMSL.
Saint Louis opens the regular season at home Tuesday, Nov. 6, vs. Southeast Missouri State. Tip time is 7 p.m. The game will be televised by FOX Sports Midwest Plus.
