RICHMOND, Va. – Saint Louis hit clutch free throws late to hang on to beat Richmond, 63-59, in Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center in Richmond, Virginia.
The Billikens improved to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in the league. They are in a three-way tie for second in the A-10 standings. Richmond fell to 7-12 and 2-4 in league play.
Robbie Avila led the Billikens with 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and 8-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe. He drained two clutch free throws late to seal it.
Isaiah Swope added 11 points and Kalu Anya chipped in 10. Anya and Avila led the Bills with nine rebounds apiece.
Dylan Warlick scored four points, including two clutch free throws with 21 seconds, and turned in a team-high plus/minus of +12.
SLU overcame a season-low four 3-pointers thanks in part to clutch shooting at the foul line. The Billikens hit 10-of-13 (.769) in the second half.
The Bills needed those free throws as they stormed back after falling behind by seven points with 4:43 remaining. SLU went on a game-deciding 10-0 run from that point on to grab the lead.
Avila had three buckets in the 10-0 run, including consecutive baskets that gave SLU the lead at 57-56 with 47 seconds left.
Meanwhile, the Billikens were getting stops, and Warlick toed the line with 21 seconds left for an important 1-and-1. He calmly drained them both to put SLU up three.
After Richmond hit a field goal, Swope and Avila continued the clutch free-throw shooting to help the Bills post the four-point win.
SLU led by as many nine points in the first half. Richmond took its largest lead of the game thanks in part to a 13-0 second-half charge.
It was defense that set the tone early for the Billikens. Richmond started 0-from-7 from the field and 0-for-6 from 3-point range. Additionally, SLU forced the Spiders into two shot clock violations in the first 10 minutes.
The Billikens were led by 10 points in the first half by Avila, and SLU took a 27-23 halftime lead into the locker room.
Saint Louis returns to Chaifetz Arena to face the La Salle Explorers on Wednesday. Game time on FanDuel Sports Network and ESPN+ is set for 7 p.m.
