The Walt Disney Company has announced a major leadership transition: Josh D’Amaro will become the new CEO effective March 18, 2026, succeeding longtime executive Bob Iger. Concurrently, Dana Walden has been named President and Chief Creative Officer in a newly created role.

This decision, unanimously approved by Disney’s Board of Directors, ends a closely watched succession process following Iger’s return to the helm in 2022 after a previous handoff went awry. Iger will step down from the CEO position at the company’s annual meeting but remain as a senior advisor and board member until his full retirement on December 31, 2026.

Josh D’Amaro, 54, brings deep internal experience to the role. A 28-year Disney veteran, he currently serves as Chairman of Disney Experiences—the company’s largest segment, generating $36 billion in revenue in FY2025 and employing 185,000 Cast Members worldwide. Under his leadership, the division has driven massive global expansion, including major investments in theme parks, resorts, cruise ships, and immersive experiences. D’Amaro has overseen innovations like new attractions, Disney Cruise Line growth (expanding to 13 ships by 2031), and partnerships that blend storytelling with technology.

Board Chairman James Gorman praised D’Amaro’s blend of “inspiring leadership and innovation,” noting his passion for the Disney brand and proven track record in strategic growth and guest satisfaction. Iger echoed this, calling him an “exceptional leader” who combines creativity with operational excellence.

In tandem, Dana Walden—previously Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment—steps into the new President and Chief Creative Officer position, also effective March 18. Walden, highly respected in the creative community, will oversee film and TV production, distribution, and content strategy across Disney’s entertainment portfolio, including streaming platforms like Disney+ and Hulu. Iger highlighted her deep knowledge of Disney’s brands and her ability to champion creativity at the company’s core.

The appointments reflect Disney’s emphasis on balancing its powerhouse experiences business with its storytelling roots amid industry challenges like streaming competition, AI advancements, and shifting media consumption.

As D’Amaro prepares to guide the Magic Kingdom into its next era, the transition signals continuity from within while positioning Disney for long-term growth and shareholder value. Fans and investors alike will watch closely to see how this new leadership duo shapes the future of one of the world’s most iconic entertainment companies.
