Singer-songwriter and actress Maya Hawke has a new album coming in May, and she’s already told us exactly what it’s about.
“This album is about learning to protect the precious from the poisonous,” she said. “Protect creation from pride. Protect love from control. Protect collaboration from jealousy.” To carry all of that, she built a character, Maitreya Corso, a magical misfit whose inability to adapt to the world around her forces her to build one of her own. It’s an unusual frame for songs that, by all accounts, feel completely open and vulnerable.
The lead single “Devil You Know” was written partly in New York while her now-husband Christian Lee Hutson was finishing his third album Paradise Pop. 10, and partly at Benjamin Lazar Davis‘s studio in Altadena. It’s conversational in a way that sounds like someone is working something out in real time and doesn’t mind that you can hear it.
Maitreya Corso is the second full-length collaboration between Hawke and Hutson — a songwriter with his own devoted following, known for his work with Phoebe Bridgers. The album was recorded over fall and winter of 2025 in Woodstock and New York City, with guitarist Will Graefe, violinist Odessa Jorgensen, and drummer Michael Riddleberger.
Hutson and Jonathan Low co-produced, with Benjamin Lazar Davis producing several tracks and Joseph Lorge mixing.
