Inside The Pageant were a thousand ecstatic fans moshing, swaying, cheering, and fainting (only one) throughout the Death or Glory North American Tour on February 17.
Opening the night were newcomers (so new we were unable to suss out much of anything about them) Rock and Skate consisting of three brothers, Logan, Chaz, and Kaden Loveless, and vocalist Ashlyn Kirtner. We’re pretty certain their regular drummer, Slate wasn’t with them but cannot determine 100 percent. The first night on the tour, the band won several new fans after their short 20-minute, energetic set full of wild lighting, that ended with their hook-laden new single, “Chemical.”
Next up, Johnnie Guilbert took the stage for a 30-minute set that included, “Afraid” and “Vampire.” The L.A.-based singer with a Sid Vicious-esque look who rose to fame through YouTube, engaged the entranced crowd throughout his set, often crouching or sitting down at the edge of the stage to be closer to their level.
The main attraction of the night, however, was the headliner, Palaye Royale. It’s the second time the L.A.-based glam, punk, fashion-rock band has graced St. Louis inside of a year when they kicked off a mini seven-city Dead To Me U.S. tour in the intimate mini space of Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room in April 2024.
For more than 10 years, this dynamic band’s onstage presence has wowed their soldiers of the royal council and Sunday night was no different. The high-octane 75-minute set began with a shirtless Remington Leith leaping off a riser belting out the opening song “Death or Glory” from their fifth studio album of the same name. Amid heavy red lights, Leith and brothers Sebastian Danzig and Emerson Barrett along with touring members Dave Green and Logan Baudean, performed hit after hit including the catchy, driving “No Love in L.A.,” the raw, dark “Punching Bag,” the anthemic “Fever Dream,” and ended the night on the driving “Mr. Doctor Man.” Not only do the brothers have swoon-worthy glam-rock good looks, but they are also talented musicians/vocalists and will hopefully continue to crank out compelling, hard-hitting yet danceable (or mosh pit-worthy) music for years to come.
