The next to last day I planned on being in western Colorado, I heard that Andy Frasco & The U.N. were performing a free concert in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, on June 21, a mere hour away from where I’d been staying. I quickly determined I could stay another night before traveling back to St. Louis. I then set out to obtain a photo pass, which came through a fellow concert photographer. (The last time I covered them in concert was this past NYE in St. Louis.)
And, boy howdy, am I glad I wrangled that photo pass and captured the night on digital “film.” Limited to under two hours, the band of now six members (which includes Sam Kelly taking over from Ernie Chang on sax) was in fine form. Frasco and the rest appeared to have the time of their lives on stage on this gorgeous summer night, which is what makes an Andy Frasco & The U.N. concert pure joy to attend. Along with some raucous behavior, this rock band mixes in some bouncy blues and, on this night, some bluegrass, which Frasco joked, “I always wanted to be a Jewish cowboy.”
I won’t go into too much detail as the band is bringing their Growing Pains tour to St. Louis on Friday, August 29, at Atomic Pavilion in the Tower Grove area, but suffice it to say, it’s a concert not to be missed (I plan to be there with camera in tow). With any luck, Frasco will crowd surf, will expound on being human and loving oneself and others, and share his pure elation of the band having their first major record label deal come through.
Hailing from Ft. Collins, Graham Good & The Painters opened the night with an hour set of feel-good, classic rock ’n’ roll vibes as the sun began setting to the west of Howelsen Hill.
