The Fixx Sold Out Delmar Hall in St. Louis Wednesday Night

This recent Forbes article sums it up best by saying The Fixx “are one of the few bands from the 1980s MTV era whose sound remains virtually intact, just like their classic longtime lineup.” And from the reactions of the sold-out crowd cheering on The Fixx Wednesday night at St. Louis’ Delmar Hall during their summer Every Five Seconds tour, supporting their June 2022 released album of the same name, fans will agree.

The one-and-a-half-hour concert was, however, not without a glitch, which came mainly from the audience and not the band’s solid performance. Just a few songs into the night three people wound up passing out and being aware of what was happening, the band paused for 10-15 minutes to allow staff to help them out in the packed room (everyone appeared okay — remember to not lock your knees in crowds).

Since 1979, The Fixx has constantly brought innovative and sleek yet complex and introspective music that appeals to a vast array of people and they brought their all to the live performance. The night started off strong with “Touch” and “Take a Risk” with an animated lead vocalist Cy Curnin setting a bit of a theatrical tone for the remainder of the night.

Obviously in tune with what was happening on the packed floor, Curnin asked at one point, “How much were the tickets tonight?” After a pause, he zeroed in on one or two people and directly said, “Do you think everyone else wants to hear you talking?” Which caused the crowd to erupt into cheers — including many who were, themselves carrying on conversations. It worked, for about 5-10 minutes before many were chattering with their friends again.

Guitarist Jamie West-Oram wowed the crowd with more than one guitar solo including a rousing one during “Deeper and Deeper.”

The volume for the night was neither too loud nor too soft. No need for earplugs and no ringing ears at the end of the night from being blasted with high decibels. It did, however, turn up a notch on some of their more popular tunes.

During “One Thing Leads to Another” dozens of phones could be seen recording as well as fans filling in many of the lines, which, Curnin cried out “No shit” after a back and forth with the crowd of “one thing, one thing” … “leads to another.”

The room glowed red during “Red Skies” after which the band took the briefest of breaks to come out with a three-song encore which included a rock-heavy “Lonely As A Lighthouse” off their new album and closed out with the now-classic “Saved by Zero” (check out this interview about the origin of the song) and “Secret Separation.”
