JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin Jailbirds sign junior catcher and third baseman, Giovanni (Gio) Mastrorosa. Mastrorosa is joining the Jailbirds from his hometown of Boca Raton, FL.
Mastrorosa has been competing at Capital University in Columbus, OH since his freshman year of college. Following a breakout sophomore campaign in 2025 where he hit an impressive .432 with 19 hits and 14 RBIs, Mastrorosa continued to prove himself in the 2026 season by recording a .278 batting average across 133 at-bats while posting a strong .451 slugging percentage. Throughout his collegiate career, he has demonstrated the ability to drive the baseball with authority, highlighted by four doubles, multiple home runs, and consistent run production.
“I am excited to get Gio here in Joplin, I coached Gio last summer and he is a great catcher and an even better person. He is perfect to pair with our other young catchers and will be a key contributor for us,” said Jailbirds Field Manager, Octavio Sanchez.
The Joplin Jailbirds will debut in Kirksville on May 29th, and their season home opener in Joplin on Tuesday, June 2nd.
