Anthony Rizzo announced his retirement from Major League Baseball today, marking the end of an illustrious 15-year career. Rizzo, a cornerstone of the Chicago Cubs’ 2016 World Series championship team, shared the news in an emotional press conference, reflecting on his journey, his impact on and off the field, and his gratitude for the game that defined his life.

Rizzo’s professional career began when he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2007, but it was with the Chicago Cubs where he truly made his mark. Acquired by the Cubs in 2012, Rizzo quickly became the heart and soul of the team. Known for his slick fielding, powerful bat, and leadership, he played a pivotal role in ending the Cubs’ 108-year championship drought in 2016. That season, Rizzo batted .292, hit 32 home runs, and drove in 109 RBIs, earning his third consecutive All-Star nod and a Gold Glove Award.

Over his career, Rizzo amassed over 300 home runs, 900 RBIs, and a .264 batting average across stints with the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, and New York Yankees. His durability was remarkable, playing at least 140 games in nine seasons, despite overcoming Hodgkin’s lymphoma early in his career. Diagnosed in 2008, Rizzo’s battle with cancer and subsequent recovery became an inspiring story, showcasing his resilience and determination.

Beyond his statistical achievements, Rizzo’s legacy is defined by his leadership and philanthropy. As a Cubs captain, he was a mentor to younger players and a unifying presence in the clubhouse. His Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, established in 2012, has raised millions for cancer research and support for families affected by the disease. Rizzo’s commitment to giving back earned him the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award in 2017, recognizing his character and community impact.

In his retirement announcement, Rizzo tearfully thanked his family, teammates, and fans. “Baseball has given me everything—friendships, memories, and the chance to make a difference,” he said. “I’m ready to step away and focus on my family and the next chapter, but I’ll always cherish this game and the people who made it special.”

Rizzo’s tenure with the New York Yankees, where he played from 2021 to 2025, further solidified his reputation as a clutch performer. Despite battling injuries in his final seasons, he remained a fan favorite, known for his infectious smile and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments. Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised Rizzo, saying, “Anthony is the kind of player and person you build a team around. His impact will be felt for years.”
