St. Louis CITY SC refused to let an early punch define the night.
Emmanuel Sabbi put Vancouver Whitecaps FC in front just two minutes into Saturday’s match at BC Place. CITY SC answered with three goals before halftime and then slammed the door, holding the hosts without a shot on goal after the break to earn a 3-1 victory — the club’s first win in Vancouver since joining MLS in 2023.
The result stretched CITY’s unbeaten run to 14 matches across all competitions, moved the club into fifth place in the Western Conference with 37 points, and delivered its 10th regular-season win of the year, matching a club first last accomplished in 2023.
Simon Becher equalized in the 23rd minute, finishing a left-footed shot from the center of the box after work from Alex Mățan and Carlo Holse. It was Becher’s seventh goal of the season and his fifth in five consecutive matches. The forward now leads the club with 12 goal contributions (seven goals, five assists).
Tomas Totland put CITY ahead in the 41st minute, driving a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner off a combination involving Daniel Edelman and Conrad Wallem. Four minutes later Wallem added his first goal of the season, finishing from close range after Totland and Mățan combined. The two fullbacks trading a goal and an assist on each other’s strikes underscored the attacking width that has become a CITY trademark.
“After they scored after two and a half minutes, there is still 88 minutes to play,” Totland said. “We know that we can create chances against any team in this league. Today when we got those chances, we converted.”
Head coach Yoann Damet praised the group’s response after falling behind so early against a strong Vancouver side.
“When you concede so early in the game against the top team, you have to give them credit,” Damet said. “The way the guys reacted, the way we kept playing, the way we kept being brave on the ball, being proactive defensively, I think shows the mindset.”
CITY SC generated 11 shots and put six on target. Vancouver finished with 13 shots but only three on goal — none after halftime. Roman Bürki and the back line, featuring Lukas MacNaughton, Timo Baumgartl and Dante Polvara, absorbed pressure without allowing the Whitecaps a second-half look on frame.
Club-record signing Rafael Navarro made his CITY debut as a second-half substitute, and Damion Downs entered late for his MLS debut. Mățan collected two assists, Holse recorded his first career MLS assist, Edelman added his fourth of the season, and Wallem now has four assists in his last five matches.
Becher called the result a statement on the road against a first-place Western Conference club.
“Coming on the road in what’s been one of the hardest places to play… we go down early and just the resilience of this group to continue to believe in ourselves,” Becher said. “We grinded out a good win and a tough place to play.”
CITY SC has now scored three or more goals in seven games this season. The club next travels to Providence Park to face the Portland Timbers on Wednesday, September 9, with kickoff at 9:30 p.m. CT.
