Celebrating Sparkle and Fade: Everclear, Local H, and Sponge Reignite the 90s

The Family Arena in St. Charles hosted a night of pure alt-rock nostalgia as Sponge, Local H, and Everclear brought the Sparkle and Fade 30th Anniversary Tour to town. It wasn’t just a concert — it was a reminder of why this era of music still cuts deep.

Sponge opened the evening and instantly impressed me. Frontman Vinnie Dombroski, along with Kyle Neely on guitar, Tim Patalan on bass, Andy Patalan on guitar, and Dave Coughlin on drums, came out swinging with pure joy. They were super engaging with the audience and had just as much fun performing for us as we did watching them. That genuine energy made their set feel personal and electric. For my first time seeing them, I walked away wishing it had lasted longer. They weren’t just an opener; they could have easily closed the night.

Local H came out swinging, with Scott Lucas demanding absolute attention from the crowd. His stop-and-start antics — finishing a song only after the audience cheered loudly enough — kept fans on their toes. With Ryan Harding pounding the kit next to him, their stripped-down two-man attack felt massive. Their set was raw, unapologetic, and intense — almost overwhelming at times, and definitely not friendly to anyone sensitive to flashing effects.

Everclear closed the night by pulling us into a musical journey that blended nostalgia with resilience. Art Alexakis gave more than just a performance; he shared pieces of himself. His reflections on sobriety and his ongoing battle with MS cast a deeper light on the songs, making them resonate in ways that went beyond memory. Hearing Sparkle and Fade in full after three decades proved its staying power — raw, relevant, and still anthemic. You could see the joy on the band’s faces, and the crowd mirrored it back. What made it even more powerful was looking around and seeing so many kids — fans who weren’t even born when this music first came out — singing along word for word. When “Santa Monica” hit, the arena turned into a single voice, generations shouting every lyric together, a moment of release where the years melted away and nothing else mattered.

The overall turnout was smaller than these bands deserved, but that wasn’t for lack of passion. St. Louis just happened to have a packed weekend of shows, and this one still carved out its place as something special. Sponge entertained, Local H demanded, and Everclear delivered a heartfelt, powerful celebration of Sparkle and Fade.
