ABC Suspends ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Indefinitely Over False Claim About Charlie Kirk’s Assassin

ABC has indefinitely suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! after host Jimmy Kimmel falsely claimed the assassin of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was a MAGA supporter. The decision, announced Tuesday, halts new episodes and reruns across ABC affiliates, with Nexstar Media Group citing Kimmel’s “offensive and misleading” remarks.

Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot last Wednesday in Provo, Utah. The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated murder. Evidence suggests Robinson leaned left, with online activity tied to anti-conservative extremism, contradicting Kimmel’s Monday monologue where he called the killer a “red-hat brigade” member.

The backlash was swift. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatened regulatory action, and #CancelKimmel trended online. Turning Point USA condemned Kimmel’s “reckless lies.” Some liberals called the remarks “tone-deaf,” while conservatives accused him of fueling division.

The suspension reflects ABC’s response to pressure from affiliates and advertisers amid heightened political tensions post-Kirk’s death. Kimmel has not commented, though his team says he’s “reviewing options.” ABC will air The Bachelor reruns and Kirk tribute specials in the show’s slot.

The incident highlights the risks of political satire in a polarized climate, with Kirk’s killing already sparking fears of further violence. Whether Kimmel’s remarks become a flashpoint or fade remains uncertain, but his show is off the air for now.
