NBA free agent Malik Beasley has been cleared in a federal gambling investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, his attorneys announced on August 22nd. The probe, which examined betting on NBA games during the 2023-24 season, had stalled Beasley’s contract talks with the Detroit Pistons for a reported three-year, $42 million deal.
Beasley’s attorneys, Steve Haney and Mike Schachter, confirmed he faces no charges, stating, “Malik remains uncharged and is not a target.” The clearance follows scrutiny over unusual betting on Beasley’s stats in a 2024 game against Portland, where he exceeded flagged prop bet expectations.
Coming off a 2024-25 season with the Pistons, where he averaged 16.3 points and set a franchise record with 319 three-pointers, Beasley’s 41.6% three-point shooting makes him a coveted free agent. Teams like the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder may pursue him, though Detroit’s cap space limits their offer to $7.2 million annually.
Despite off-court challenges, including a lawsuit over a $650,000 advance and an eviction for unpaid rent, Beasley’s clearance refocuses attention on his elite shooting. As the 2025 NBA preseason nears, his free agency market is poised to rebound.
