University of Miami transfer and Chicago native AJ Casey announced that he will transfer to the Billikens’ men’s basketball program. He will have two years of eligibility beginning in the 2024-25 academic year.
“We are incredibly excited to add AJ to our program,” SLU head coach Josh Schertz said. “The things that really pop out to me are his athleticism and versatility on both ends of the floor. He’s a true hybrid, which means offensively he can play with a big and also operate as a small-ball 5. Defensively, he has the quickness, length, strength and lateral quickness to guard 1-5. He’s a great young man who is hungry for this opportunity, and I cannot wait to partner with him to help reach his ceiling as a player.”
Casey, a 6-foot-9 forward, appeared in 53 games for the Hurricanes in his two seasons. In 2022-23, he led all Miami freshmen by playing in 29 games and appeared in Miami’s Final Four matchup against UConn. Additionally, Casey played in the Hurricanes’ NCAA Tournament wins against Indiana and Texas.
A consensus four-star recruit out of Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in Chicago, Casey signed as the No. 60 recruit in ESPN’s 2022 Top 100 rankings. He was a McDonald’s All-American Game nominee after averaging 19.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 3.0 blocks as a senior. Casey helped the Dolphins to a city title and state finals berth his senior year.
Casey has attended four USA Basketball national team camps during his youth. He also helped Meanstreets reach the 2021 Nike EYBL Peach Jam semifinals. He was an honor roll student all four years of his high school career.
Casey is the sixth new Billiken brought on by Schertz and the SLU staff. The Billikens have accounted for nine of their 13 scholarships for the 2024-25 season.
