With their bullpen in need of reinforcements amid a string of inconsistent outings, the St. Louis Cardinals are turning to one of their most dominant minor league arms. The club is planning to select the contract of right-handed reliever Luis Gastelum from Triple-A Memphis, according to reports from Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat and Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The timing remains fluid, potentially tied to how the pitching staff is deployed during Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers. Gastelum was en route to St. Louis on Tuesday morning and is expected to join the active roster within the next couple of days.
The 24-year-old Gastelum has been a revelation out of the Memphis bullpen this season. In 36 appearances and 43 2/3 innings, he owns a sparkling 2.27 ERA, striking out 28% of the batters he’s faced while walking just 9.7% and generating ground balls at a 51% clip. His overall numbers are strong, but they only tell part of the story.
Nearly all the damage against Gastelum has been confined to one disastrous outing on May 13, when he allowed six earned runs in a brief appearance against Miami’s Triple-A affiliate. Since that rough patch, he has been virtually untouchable: 22 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings with a 30-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio and just eight hits allowed. That kind of dominance is exactly what a taxed Cardinals relief corps has been craving.
Originally signed by the Cardinals as an amateur free agent out of Mexico for a modest $30,000 in 2023, Gastelum has steadily climbed the organizational ladder with consistent performances. He had never cracked the team’s top-30 prospect lists entering the season, but his breakout campaign in Triple-A has vaulted him to No. 21 on MLB.com’s midseason Cardinals prospect rankings.
Scouts note that Gastelum isn’t an overpowering flamethrower — his four-seam fastball and sinker sit around 94 mph — but his changeup is regarded as a true plus offering that generates swings and misses. He profiles as a high-leverage bullpen piece with the potential for a meaningful major league career.
The move comes as the Cardinals continue to shuffle their relief options in search of stability. Recent reports indicate the bullpen has been a point of frustration, with costly late-inning meltdowns contributing to tough losses, including against division rivals like the Brewers. Adding a fresh, high-performing arm like Gastelum represents a logical internal solution as the team navigates the heart of the summer schedule.
For a Cardinals organization that has emphasized prospect development and depth, Gastelum’s promotion offers a reminder of the talent bubbling just below the surface in Memphis. If he can translate his recent minor league form to the big leagues, he could quickly earn a trusted role in manager Oliver Marmol’s bullpen plans.
