Some concerts are good. Some concerts are nostalgic. And then there are nights like this at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre that remind you why live music hits different.
From the moment the Doobie Brothers took the stage, it was almost hard to believe how good they sounded. Not “good for their age” good. Just flat-out good… no,no, they were immaculate. Every harmony was spot on, every instrument sat perfectly in the mix, and they were so locked into their sound that it felt like someone had dropped a vinyl record right into the middle of the venue. Crispy, clean, and every bit as strong as the songs we’ve all had on repeat for decades.
And then there was Michael McDonald.
As a Missouri girl, there was something extra special about seeing Ferguson-born Michael McDonald standing on that stage. The second that unmistakable voice filled the venue, the crowd absolutely lit up. Hearing him weave a few of his solo hits between the Doobie Brothers classics felt like getting bonus tracks on an already perfect album. Every time there was a break in the music, a few guys in my section made it their mission to shout just how much they loved Michael McDonald. After a few rounds of the fellas going completely feral, McDonald finally acknowledged the love with a huge smile and a thumbs up, earning one of the loudest reactions of the night.
By the time Santana took over, the crowd was fully locked in. Carlos Santana doesn’t just play guitar—he has a conversation with it. Every note seemed to float over the crowd while the band’s infectious rhythms turned the entire venue into one giant dance floor. Then came one of the most memorable moments of the evening when the Doobie Brothers returned to the stage for a few songs. The entire place seemed to rise to its feet at once. How lucky are we to witness Grammy Award-winning artists and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legends coming together for an unforgettable jam session? The chemistry between the bands was undeniable. We weren’t the only ones having fun, either. Watching those musicians grin at one another and feed off the energy of the crowd made it clear they were having the time of their lives, and we were fortunate enough to witness it.
What struck me most was that not a single person seemed concerned that much of Santana’s set leaned heavily into his Latin roots. Nobody walked out because they didn’t understand every lyric. Nobody complained. They didn’t need to. Music has always been its own language, and last night proved it. The crowd felt every note, every rhythm, and every ounce of passion coming from the stage. In a world where people seem determined to find something to argue about, it was refreshing to spend an evening watching thousands of people simply enjoy the music and celebrate being together. For a few hours, everyone was there for the same reason—to celebrate music. It was a pure dose of serotonin and exactly what our souls needed.
This was the kind of show you hope for every time you buy a ticket. The kind that’s worth every penny because the memories are priceless. Fittingly, for a tour called Oneness, thousands of strangers came together as one. Different ages, different backgrounds, different walks of life, all connected because music is THAT powerful.
Melissa O’Rourke aka WickedWitchofSTL is a jack of all trades. By day she’s an established tattooist and piercer, by night a mother to her amazing son (who is a hell of a guitarist). Melissa has a musical background and can often be found at a local karaoke joint, or a concert when she’s not driving across the country for an adventure. This social butterfly always welcomes conversation so come say hi! See y’all at the next gig!
