Oliver Tree Nickell, the genre-defying singer-songwriter, producer, and internet sensation better known as Oliver Tree, has tragically passed away at the age of 32. He died on June 14, 2026, following a mid-air collision involving two helicopters over Recreio dos Bandeirantes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

According to reports, Tree was one of six people killed in the accident, which also claimed the life of Argentine YouTuber Gaspi and four others. Authorities confirmed Tree was aboard one of the helicopters at the time of the crash.

Born Oliver Tree Nickell on June 29, 1993, in Santa Cruz, California, Tree rose to prominence with his quirky persona, distinctive bowl haircut, and eclectic blend of indie, electronic, hip-hop, and pop elements. He attended the California Institute of the Arts and built a devoted following through viral music videos and a memorable, often meme-worthy public image that blended humor, irony, and raw emotion.

Tree broke through with hits like “Alien Boy” and “Life Goes On,” the latter becoming a massive streaming success and cultural touchstone. His discography includes several studio albums, with his most recent, Love You Madly Hate You Badly, released independently on April 24, 2026, under his own Alien Boy Records label after parting ways with Atlantic Records.

Just weeks before his death, Tree had launched “The World’s First World Tour” in support of the new album. The ambitious trek, spanning multiple continents and more than 70 shows, began on May 30, 2026, in Mexico City and had recently included stops in South America, including São Paulo.

Fans and fellow artists have taken to social media to express shock and share tributes, remembering Tree not only for his music but for his boundary-pushing creativity, scooter-riding antics, and ability to connect with audiences through both absurdity and vulnerability.

Tree’s career was marked by innovation and unpredictability. He was as much a filmmaker and visual artist as a musician, crafting memorable videos that amplified his songs’ reach. His independent spirit in his final album release highlighted a commitment to artistic control in the later stages of his career.

At just 32, Oliver Tree leaves behind a body of work that influenced a new generation of genre-blending artists and left an indelible mark on modern pop culture. His sudden passing serves as a stark reminder of life’s fragility, even amid soaring success.
