Today, Ubisoft officially pulled back the black flag on one of gaming’s worst-kept secrets. During a worldwide reveal showcase, the studio unveiled Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced—a full remake of the 2013 classic, rebuilt from the ground up on the latest Anvil engine. Edward Kenway’s swashbuckling saga in the Golden Age of Piracy is back, reimagined for modern hardware with stunning visuals, refined gameplay, and fresh story beats.
The original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remains a fan favorite, having racked up over 34 million players since launch. Now, Resynced aims to introduce that Caribbean adventure to a new generation while giving veterans a reason to hoist the sails once more.
Ubisoft’s clear directive for Resynced: focus on Edward Kenway’s solo journey as a pirate-turned-Assassin. Multiplayer is gone. The Freedom Cry DLC is not included. Extensive modern-day Abstergo office sections have been excised. Instead, the team has streamlined the experience into a “pure story-driven adventure” centered squarely on the 18th-century Caribbean.
Creative Director Paul Fu put it plainly: “With Resynced, we made a clear choice. It is a pure, story-driven adventure, and we are fully focused on Edward’s adventures in the Caribbean. […] Resynced is a 2026 take on the original legend, and for those of us who are curious, the original will still be available.”
The modern-day framework has evolved too. New Animus rifts explore Edward’s internal struggles rather than office exploration, tying his memories more intimately to the present-day narrative.
Fans can expect fresh narrative layers without straying from the original’s spirit. Three new crewmates join the Jackdaw—including Lucy Baldwin (“The Padre”) and “Dead Man Smith”—each with their own story quests. Additional scenes expand on iconic figures like Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, plus a new moment between Edward and his wife Caroline. Returning scribe Darby McDevitt penned the additions, and Matt Ryan reprises his role as Edward’s voice.
Under the hood, Resynced keeps the soul of Black Flag while borrowing polish from recent entries:
- Combat: Fully reworked into an action-oriented, parry-focused system. No more special attacks—emphasis is on fluid, responsive swordplay and gunplay.
- Parkour & Stealth: Free jumps, side ejects, back ejects, and a crouch toggle. Eavesdropping missions no longer auto-fail if spotted.
- Naval Action: The Jackdaw returns with upgraded cannons (including alternate fire modes), crewmate contributions, and even the option to add a shipboard pet (cat or monkey). Sea shanties make a triumphant return with new additions.
- Exploration: The vast open world feels more alive than ever, with dynamic weather systems that whip up towering waves and dramatic storms.
Visually, the game looks spectacular—close in fidelity to Assassin’s Creed Shadows but tailored to the pirate fantasy. Towering ships, sun-drenched islands, and cinematic naval battles pop off the screen.

- Standard Edition: $59.99
- Collector’s Edition: $199.99, featuring a premium Edward Kenway statue seated at the Jackdaw’s helm, complete with maps, shanties, and other swashbuckling memorabilia.

Resynced isn’t just a visual upgrade—it’s a love letter to what made Black Flag legendary: freedom, naval mastery, and Edward Kenway’s roguish charm. By trimming the fat and doubling down on story and gameplay, Ubisoft is betting that the pirate life still has plenty of wind in its sails.
Game Director Richard Knight captured the team’s passion: “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced matters deeply to us, and to you. That’s why we took the time to rebuild it with the care it deserves. This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience.”
Yo ho ho—Edward Kenway is sailing back into our lives. Mark your calendars for July 9, 2026. The Caribbean awaits. 🏴☠️
