The Kansas City Current announced Chris Armas as their new head coach on Wednesday, succeeding Vlatko Andonovski, who stepped down from coaching duties in November 2025 to focus on his role as sporting director.

Armas, a 2025 National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, brings over three decades of elite experience as a player and coach. Co-owners Angie and Chris Long said: “He shares our vision of making the Kansas City Current the best women’s football club in the world. A natural leader, Chris demands excellence.”

Most recently, Armas coached the Colorado Rapids in MLS (2024-2025), returning them to the playoffs, earning third place in the 2025 Leagues Cup, and winning consecutive Rocky Mountain Cups.

His coaching highlights include:

  • Head women’s coach at Adelphi University (2011-2014), with consecutive conference finals, an NCAA berth, and national Coach of the Year honors in 2013.
  • New York Red Bulls (2015-2020): Assistant during 2015 Supporters’ Shield win; head coach in 2018, securing another Shield and conference finals.
  • Assistants at Manchester United (2021-2022) and Leeds United (2023), including interim role at Leeds.

As a player, the former USMNT midfielder (66 caps) starred in MLS with LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, winning the 1998 MLS Cup, multiple Open Cups, five Best XI selections, and 2003 Comeback Player of the Year.

Armas stated: “I’m honored… I will do everything I can to help make the KC Current the best women’s football club in the world.”

Sporting director Andonovski added: “Chris brings a wealth of experience… his winning mindset will be invaluable.”

This marks Armas’ first professional women’s coaching role, building on his college experience as the Current aim for championships.
