St. Louis CITY SC has added another option in attack, acquiring 22-year-old U.S. men’s national team forward Damion Downs on loan from English Championship club Southampton through the 2027 Sprint season. The deal includes a purchase option at the end of the loan.
CITY also secured Downs’ Discovery Priority from Charlotte FC in exchange for $350,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money, clearing the path for the move under MLS roster rules.
Sporting director Corey Wray framed the signing as both a tactical fit and a long-term development play.
“Damion brings an exciting mix of technical quality, pace and athleticism to our attack,” Wray said. “He gives us a different profile at the forward position and the flexibility to play in different ways. His ability to combine with his teammates, get in behind and make an impact in the box will give us another weapon in attack. For a player his age, he already has a lot of valuable experience, including time with the U.S. Men’s National Team, and we believe he still has more room to grow. We’re excited to bring him to St. Louis as we look to build on our strong run of form.”
Downs, a 6-foot-4 center forward born in Werneck, Germany, came through several German youth systems before joining 1. FC Köln’s academy. He made his Bundesliga debut with Köln in 2023-24 and scored his first top-flight goal on March 9, 2024, against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The following season he produced 10 goals and five assists and played a meaningful role as Köln earned automatic promotion back to the Bundesliga.
Southampton signed him in the summer of 2025. He made 14 appearances for the Saints before spending the second half of 2025-26 on loan at Hamburger SV. First-team minutes have been harder to come by since that Köln breakout, which is part of why a loan to MLS — with a path to a permanent stay — made sense for both sides.
Internationally, Downs represented Germany at youth level before committing to the United States. He earned his senior USMNT debut in 2025 and was part of the Gold Cup roster, appearing four times. He already has history at Energizer Park: he came on as a substitute in the United States’ semifinal win over Guatemala on July 2, 2025, and converted the decisive penalty in the quarterfinal shootout victory over Costa Rica.
CITY has been among the hotter teams in the league of late, and the club is adding attacking depth while the window is still open. Downs gives the staff a tall, mobile forward who can stretch the line, combine in tight spaces, and finish in the box — a different look from some of the options already on the roster.
If the loan works, St. Louis will have the chance to keep him beyond 2027. For now, the immediate task is getting him integrated and seeing whether the player who broke through in Germany can recapture that form in MLS.
