In a monumental recruiting win for the Missouri Tigers, five-star combo guard Jason Crowe Jr. announced his commitment to the program on July 18, 2025, during a live broadcast on CBS Sports HQ. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound prospect from Inglewood, California, is ranked as the No. 6 overall player in the Class of 2026 by 247Sports’ composite rankings, making him the second-highest-rated recruit in Missouri basketball history, surpassed only by Michael Porter Jr. in 2017. This commitment marks a significant milestone for head coach Dennis Gates, who has been steadily elevating the Tigers’ program since taking the helm in 2022.

A Rising Star Chooses Mizzou

Crowe, widely regarded as one of the most dynamic scorers in high school basketball, chose Missouri over a host of elite programs, including Kentucky, USC, UCLA, Texas, Alabama, and Arkansas. Despite Kentucky being the perceived frontrunner for much of his recruitment—due to a close family connection with Wildcats assistant coach Jason Hart—Missouri surged ahead in recent weeks. National recruiting analyst Joe Tipton of On3 noted that Missouri had “quietly gained serious momentum” in early July, a shift confirmed by 247Sports’ Travis Branham, who logged a crystal ball prediction for the Tigers with a 93.1% accuracy rate.

Crowe’s decision was influenced by his connection with Coach Gates, whom he praised for his genuine approach. “I feel like the first call that I had with Coach Gates was a different conversation [than] I had with any other college coach,” Crowe told CBS Sports HQ. “He wasn’t just talking to me, trying to recruit me. He was actually there for me as a player, and then as a person, as well.” Crowe also highlighted Gates’ high-energy coaching style and family-first mentality, noting their meaningful conversations during USA Basketball tryouts.

A Prolific Scorer with One-and-Done Potential

Crowe’s on-court prowess is undeniable. A left-handed scoring guard, he led the Nike EYBL circuit in scoring during the 2025 season, averaging 23.8 points per game, with a standout 26.5 points per game at the Peach Jam tournament. During his junior year at Inglewood High School, Crowe averaged an astonishing 35.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 3.1 steals, guiding his team to a 26-7 record. His scoring versatility—excelling in transition, mid-range pull-ups, and catch-and-shoot scenarios—has drawn comparisons to elite shot-creators at the collegiate and professional levels.

Scouts praise Crowe’s advanced ball-handling, polished footwork, and ability to navigate pick-and-rolls with veteran-like precision. “He’s a volume scorer, who can rattle off buckets in bunches when he gets going,” wrote 247Sports’ Adam Finkelstein. Crowe’s 49.5% shooting on pull-up mid-range jumpers over 29 games underscores his shot-making ability, though his 25.6% three-point shooting in EYBL play suggests room for growth from beyond the arc. His assist-to-turnover ratio in half-court settings (0.5) indicates passing as a potential area for improvement, particularly as he transitions to the SEC’s competitive landscape.

At just 17 years old—having celebrated his birthday on the day of his commitment—Crowe is young for his grade and possesses significant physical upside. Continued strength development will be key as he prepares to absorb contact and hold his own defensively at the collegiate level.

A Game-Changer for Missouri

Crowe’s commitment is a testament to Dennis Gates’ recruiting prowess and the upward trajectory of Missouri basketball. Since arriving in Columbia, Gates has led the Tigers to two NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons, including a No. 6 seed in 2024. Landing Crowe, the first five-star recruit of Gates’ tenure, signals a new era for the program, which has not seen a recruit of this caliber since Michael Porter Jr.

The Tigers envision Crowe as a cornerstone of their 2026-27 backcourt, potentially alongside Anthony Robinson II and UCLA transfer Sebastian Mack. His arrival provides orderly succession planning, as Robinson could depart for the NBA, leaving Crowe as the heir apparent at point guard. Missouri’s fast-paced, high-octane offense—ranked 10th nationally in scoring (83.6 points per game) and eighth in adjusted offensive efficiency in 2024-25—aligns perfectly with Crowe’s explosive scoring ability.

Crowe’s commitment also boosts Missouri’s recruiting momentum. The Tigers are pursuing other top 2026 prospects, including five-star forward Toni Bryant and four-star talents Ethan Taylor, Aidan Chronister, and Tristan Reed. With Crowe as the first pledge in the Class of 2026, Missouri has already climbed to No. 5 in 247Sports’ national team rankings and No. 1 in the SEC for that cycle.
