Felix Baumgartner, the Austrian skydiver and daredevil who captivated the world with his record-breaking stratospheric jump, has passed away at the age of 56, in a fatal paragliding accident while flying over Porto Sant’Elpidio, Italy.

On October 14, 2012, Baumgartner ascended to 128,100 feet (39 kilometers) in a helium balloon before jumping, reaching a speed of 843.6 mph (Mach 1.25) and landing safely in New Mexico.
