The Kansas City Chiefs have secured star guard Trey Smith with a four-year, $94 million contract extension, making him the NFL’s highest-paid guard. The deal, finalized on July 15, 2025, includes $70 million guaranteed, with $46.75 million fully guaranteed, replacing Smith’s $23.4 million franchise tag.

Smith, a 2021 sixth-round pick, has started 67 of 68 regular-season games and all 13 playoff games, earning a 2024 Pro Bowl nod. His durability and elite pass protection—allowing just 1.5 sacks last season—solidify the Chiefs’ offensive line alongside center Creed Humphrey’s $72 million deal.

To manage the salary cap, Kansas City traded guard Joe Thuney, freeing $16 million, and added tackle Josh Simmons and free agent Jaylon Moore. The revamped line aims to protect Patrick Mahomes after a 2024 season where the Chiefs allowed 41 sacks and lost Super Bowl LIX.

Smith’s $23.5 million average annual value surpasses Landon Dickerson’s $21 million, with payouts of $27 million in 2025, $20 million in 2026, and $23.5 million in 2027 and 2028.
