Cheese, the iconic family entertainment chain known for pizza, games, and animatronic shows, is stepping into new territory with the launch of Chuck’s Arcade, a spin-off designed specifically for adults and older teens. Described as a “modern-day love letter to the games and people who made Chuck E. Cheese great,” this new venture aims to capture the nostalgia of arcade gaming while appealing to a more mature audience. With 10 locations already open across the United States and more planned, Chuck’s Arcade marks a bold evolution for the brand, which has historically been a haven for children’s birthday parties.

A Nostalgic Yet Modern Gaming Experience

Chuck’s Arcade blends retro classics with contemporary gaming to create an experience that resonates with both lifelong fans and a new generation. Visitors can expect to find beloved arcade games like Donkey Kong, Ms. Pac-Man, Mortal Kombat, and Centipede, alongside newer titles such as Halo and Connect Four Hoops. Some locations also feature immersive virtual reality experiences, adding a cutting-edge twist to the nostalgic vibe. Each arcade is uniquely designed, adorned with original artwork that celebrates the 50-year history of Chuck E. Cheese, ensuring no two venues are exactly alike.

Unlike the traditional Chuck E. Cheese restaurants, most Chuck’s Arcade locations focus solely on gaming, forgoing the pizza and costumed mascots that define the kid-centric venues. However, the Kansas City, Missouri, location stands out as Chuck’s Arcade and Pizzeria, offering a full menu with classic Chuck E. Cheese items like pizza and chicken wings, as well as beer and wine for guests over 21. This blend of food, drinks, and gaming positions the Kansas City venue as a unique hybrid, catering to adults seeking both entertainment and dining.

Animatronics Reimagined

While Chuck’s Arcade moves away from the traditional animatronic performances, the iconic characters of Munch’s Make Believe Band—Chuck E. Cheese, Jasper T. Jowls, Helen Henny, Pasqually, and Mr. Munch—still play a role. Each arcade is “overseen” by one of these characters, presented as stationary figures or statues, often encased in glass, serving as a nostalgic nod rather than performing as they do in family locations. This decision follows the company’s recent phase-out of animatronic shows in most of its 500 traditional venues, a move that sparked some fan backlash but was reversed at five locations after public outcry.

A Strategic Move Amid Recovery and Competition

The launch of Chuck’s Arcade comes as Chuck E. Cheese continues to recover from financial challenges, including a bankruptcy filing in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has since invested $350 million in remodeling its existing locations and introducing budget-friendly pricing tiers to attract families. CEO David McKillips calls Chuck’s Arcade a “natural evolution” for the brand, emphasizing its goal to “extend our arcade legacy into new formats that engage both lifelong fans and a new generation through a curated mix of retro classics and cutting-edge experiences.”

This adult-focused venture also positions Chuck E. Cheese to compete with rivals like Dave & Buster’s, which has faced challenges with a reported 9.4% decline in same-store sales and criticism of “ill-advised changes” by its new management. By offering a gaming-centric experience with adult-oriented prizes, retro-themed merchandise, and select locations with alcohol, Chuck’s Arcade aims to capture a share of the adult entertainment market while leveraging the brand’s nostalgic appeal.

Locations and Future Plans

As of July 2025, Chuck’s Arcade has opened 10 locations in eight states, including St. Petersburg, Florida; Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; El Paso, Texas; St. Louis, Missouri; Trumbull, Connecticut; Victor, New York; Buford, Georgia; and Nashua and Salem, New Hampshire. The company has hinted at more locations on the horizon, signaling an ambitious expansion plan. Each venue offers ticket redemption for prizes, similar to the traditional Chuck E. Cheese model, but with rewards tailored to adults, such as nostalgic merchandise, apparel, and novelty candy.

Tapping Into Nostalgia

Chuck’s Arcade is a strategic gamble on nostalgia, targeting adults who grew up “surrounded by the electric glow of arcade screens, the symphony of digital soundtracks, and the thrill of chasing high scores with friends long into the night.” The concept builds on the brand’s legacy, which began in 1977 when Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell opened the first Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre in San Jose, California, pioneering the family entertainment center model. By reimagining this legacy for an older audience, Chuck E. Cheese hopes to rekindle those childhood memories while offering a fresh, adult-friendly experience.

As the company continues to innovate, Chuck’s Arcade represents a bold step toward broadening its appeal. Whether it’s battling it out on Mortal Kombat, redeeming tickets for retro swag, or enjoying a beer with a slice of pizza in Kansas City, Chuck’s Arcade invites adults to relive their childhood dreams in a space designed just for them.
