POMONA, NY – The Gateway Grizzlies secured a 6-1 victory against the New York Boulders in a Father’s Day game on Sunday, wrapping up their weekend series at Clover Stadium. Veteran pitcher Zac Treece (1-1) led the way, delivering an impressive six-plus innings, allowing just one run and clinching the series for Gateway.

The Grizzlies wasted no time, jumping on New York’s starting pitcher Garrett Coe (1-4) in the first inning. Gabe Holt, Victor Castillo, and D.J. Stewart opened with three consecutive singles, and a double play grounder by Dale Thomas brought in the first run, putting Gateway up 1-0.

The offense continued in the second inning when Holt drove in another run with a two-out single to left-center, slipping past Boulders’ shortstop Austin Dennis to make it 2-0. In the third, Stewart singled and Thomas doubled, setting the stage for Mark Shallenberger’s three-run homer to the opposite field, pushing the lead to 5-0. Thomas added a solo home run in the fourth, extending the advantage to 6-0.

Treece, at 35 years old, was dominant in his second start of the season, holding a potent New York lineup—fresh off a 14-run performance the previous day—to just four hits and two walks through six innings. In the seventh, after Treece allowed a walk and a single, the Boulders loaded the bases and scored their only run on a walk to Ryan McCoy. Reliever Alec Whaley stepped in, striking out Alfredo Marte and inducing a pop-out from Christian Ficca to maintain the 6-1 lead. Francis Peguero and Keegan Collett closed out the game with scoreless eighth and ninth innings, sealing Gateway’s third win in four games and their second-ever road series victory against an Atlantic Conference team in the Frontier League.

Now standing at 19-13 after a 7-5 road trip, the Grizzlies head back to Arsenal BG Ballpark for a nine-game homestand, starting with a matchup against the Schaumburg Boomers, the West Division’s top two teams, on Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. CT.
