St. Louis CITY SC secured its first MLS Cup Playoff appearance since the club’s inaugural 2023 season with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday night at Energizer Park. The result also extended CITY SC’s unbeaten run to a league-record 21 matches across all competitions (19 in MLS play), further solidifying one of the most consistent stretches in club history.

The match featured the intensity expected from two of the Western Conference’s top teams. Vancouver controlled much of the early possession and generated the majority of the chances, finishing with 17 shots to CITY SC’s nine. Yet the visitors managed only one shot on target, while St. Louis recorded four. Goalkeeper Roman Bürki, who earned his fifth clean sheet of the season, and a disciplined defensive unit limited Vancouver’s opportunities throughout. CITY SC committed 18 fouls to Vancouver’s 14 and conceded 10 corner kicks while earning five of its own. Caution cards were issued to Fallou Fall and Alex Mățan for St. Louis, and to Edier Ocampo and Ralph Priso for Vancouver.

Head coach Yoann Damet described the contest as one of two halves. He noted that CITY SC started with its head “a little bit underwater” after Vancouver’s strong opening, then grew into the match and controlled more of the second half through greater patience on the ball and more measured pressing. Damet highlighted the defensive effort from the front line through the back, praising the collective work that produced the shutout against a team he called one of the best in the league. He viewed the game as valuable experience given the elevated stakes, similar to the pressure of upcoming knockout matches, and emphasized the importance of managing momentum and remaining composed against high-level opponents.

Defender Timo Baumgartl called the playoff clinch another box checked on the season’s list of objectives while stressing that the group remains focused on larger goals. He pointed to the team’s internal standard—refusing to settle even after high-scoring wins—and the growing confidence and chemistry that have developed, particularly with summer additions. Baumgartl also noted the club’s desire to push for a strong finish in the remaining league matches and to stay prepared for the playoffs and an upcoming final.

With the playoff berth secured and the unbeaten streak intact, CITY SC now turns its attention to the road. The club travels to face Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field on Saturday, October 17, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. CT.
