The Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) made history on July 8, 2026, by revealing the nicknames and logos for its four inaugural teams. This marks a major milestone for women’s baseball in the U.S., representing the first professional women’s league in over 70 years.

Each team name honors a pioneering woman who broke barriers in her field, tying into the cities they represent. The branding emphasizes empowerment, resilience, and the spirit of the game.

Boston Hunters Inspired by Dr. Harriot K. Hunt, a pioneering Boston physician and women’s rights activist who was the first woman to apply to Harvard Medical School and establish a successful medical practice in the U.S. The logo features a focused osprey clutching a baseball bat in its talons, symbolizing precision, instinct, and relentless drive.

New York Heights Named after Dorothy Irene Height, a legendary civil rights and women’s rights leader from New York. The logo incorporates graphic lines that evoke both the New York skyline and the speed of a fastball, representing movement, precision, and audacity.

Los Angeles Queens Honoring Lizzie Murphy, known as the “Queen of the Diamond,” the first woman to play baseball against Major League players (in a 1922 charity game). She excelled as a first baseman in barnstorming teams for years. The logo is a bold capital “Q” topped with four baseball diamonds, symbolizing power and prestige.

San Francisco Firebells Tribute to Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a lifelong advocate for San Francisco’s volunteer firefighters, nicknamed “Firebelle.” The branding creatively fuses a bell and phoenix motif, capturing resilience and the city’s fiery spirit.

All games for the 2026 inaugural season will be played at the neutral-site Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, starting August 1. The opener features the New York Heights vs. Los Angeles Queens.

The WPBL was co-founded by Justine Siegal and Keith Stein to create professional opportunities for female players. Tryouts and a draft in 2025 drew significant attention, including the return of former Little League star Mo’ne Davis (drafted by the Queens) and other talents like Kelsie Whitmore.
