It was the kind of statement win this team has been chasing all season — a resilient, north-driving effort against one of the league’s elite clubs that keeps the Blues’ flickering playoff hopes flickering just a little brighter.
Thomas opened the scoring at 12:01 of the first period, one-timing a centering feed from Jimmy Snuggerud top shelf past Mackenzie Blackwood’s blocker. The Blues led 1-0, and the top line was already humming. Colorado answered at 15:10 when Parker Kelly redirected a Brent Burns point shot that caromed off a Blues defender and past Joel Hofer.
The Avalanche grabbed their only lead early in the second when Burns wired a wrist shot from the right point through traffic at 3:40. But just 29 seconds later — after Hofer had robbed Nathan MacKinnon on a clean breakaway — Dylan Holloway fed Thomas on a rush, and the center zipped a glove-side shot home from the bottom of the right circle to knot it at 2-2.
The third period belonged to the Blues’ captain. With 2:50 remaining, Snuggerud won a 2-on-1 battle, toe-dragged a sliding defender, and slid a perfect backdoor pass to Thomas, who buried it for the hat trick and the game-winner. Ball Arena went quiet. The Blues bench exploded.
Hofer was outstanding in net, turning aside 26 shots, including several high-danger chances in a frantic final minute. The Blues limited one of the NHL’s most explosive offenses to just two goals and zero third-period tallies — a testament to the disciplined, five-man defensive structure they’ve shown during this late-season surge.
Thomas finished with three goals. Snuggerud and Holloway each collected three assists. The trio has been nothing short of electric since the Olympic break, and on this night they carried a team that refused to wilt on the road against a club chasing the Presidents’ Trophy.
For the Blues (33-31-12), the victory capped a 2-1-1 road trip and improved them to 13-3-3 since late February. They sit three points back of Nashville for the final Western Conference wild-card spot, with a home-and-home against these same Avalanche awaiting Tuesday night at Enterprise Center.
The Avalanche (50-16-10) remain in command of the Central Division and the West, but they were reminded once again that this Blues team — when it’s clicking — can beat anyone.
