The wrestling world lost one of its brightest young prospects Thursday when 19-year-old Iranian freestyle wrestler Saleh Mohammadi was publicly executed by hanging in Nabovvat Square.

Mohammadi, who captured a bronze medal at the 2024 Saitiev Cup in Russia and was viewed as a future contender for senior world and Olympic medals, was put to death along with two other men. Iranian authorities convicted the trio in connection with the killing of two police officers during widespread anti-regime protests in January.

A rising talent known for his explosive takedowns and relentless pace, Mohammadi had represented Iran on the international stage with distinction. Many within the sport believed his best years were still ahead of him, with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics potentially serving as the platform where he could challenge for a medal.

The case drew urgent attention from the global wrestling community in recent weeks. Iranian-American athletes and coaches launched public campaigns calling on United World Wrestling and the International Olympic Committee to intervene. Those efforts proved unsuccessful.

Human rights organizations have raised serious concerns about the fairness of the trial, alleging that Mohammadi’s confession was coerced through torture and that he was denied proper legal representation. His execution marks the first publicly announced death sentence carried out in relation to the January protests.

For a sport that has long been a point of national pride in Iran, the public hanging of one of its young champions sends a chilling message. Multiple Iranian wrestlers have faced political pressure or fled the country in recent years. Now, the death of Saleh Mohammadi raises fresh questions about whether Iranian athletes can compete freely on the world stage while their government continues to use capital punishment against its citizens — including its own sports stars.
