In one of the most anticipated and surprising announcements in combat sports history, two of women’s MMA’s biggest pioneers will finally face off inside the cage. Former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will return to mixed martial arts for the first time in nearly a decade to battle fellow legend Gina Carano on May 16, 2026. The featherweight superfight will stream live globally on Netflix, marking the platform’s very first live MMA broadcast.

The event takes place at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California (Los Angeles area), and is being promoted by Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), the company co-founded by Jake Paul. Tickets are expected to go on sale in early March, with additional undercard bouts to be announced later.

This matchup has been dreamed about by fans for over a decade. Rousey and Carano were trailblazers who helped elevate women’s MMA to mainstream attention in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, but their paths never crossed competitively—until now.

Rousey, 39, last competed in MMA in late 2016, losing to Amanda Nunes in what was her final UFC appearance. With a professional record of 12-2 (9 submissions, 3 KOs), she revolutionized the sport as the first women’s UFC champion and brought unprecedented attention to female fighters. Her return after almost 10 years away is being billed as a one-night-only comeback.

Carano, 43, has been out of the cage even longer—her last professional fight came in 2009, meaning she’ll be stepping back into competition after 16 years away. She compiled a 7-1 record (1 submission, 3 KOs) during her career and is widely regarded as one of the earliest stars of women’s MMA before transitioning to a successful acting career (including her role in The Mandalorian before parting ways with Lucasfilm/Disney).

Both fighters have expressed mutual respect in official statements. Rousey called it “the biggest super fight in women’s combat sport history” and said she has been waiting to announce it. Carano noted that Rousey personally told her she would only come out of retirement for this matchup.

The bout will be contested at 145 pounds (featherweight) under the Unified Rules of MMA, over five 5-minute rounds, inside a regulation hexagon cage using 4-ounce gloves.

This isn’t just a comeback fight—it’s a landmark moment for streaming and combat sports. Netflix has previously aired high-profile boxing events (like Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson), but this marks their first-ever live MMA production. Partnering with MVP allows them to showcase a standalone event featuring retired icons rather than contracted UFC fighters.

The global reach of Netflix means millions of casual and hardcore fans will have access to the fight as part of their regular subscription, with no additional pay-per-view cost.

While both women are far removed from their primes, the matchup carries massive historical and emotional weight. It’s a rare chance to see two pioneers settle a “what if” scenario that fans have debated for years. The event is being positioned as a celebration of women’s MMA’s roots while introducing the sport to a broader streaming audience.

A press conference and face-off is scheduled for March 5 at the Intuit Dome, where more details about the full card and fighter preparations are expected to emerge.

Love them or question the timing, Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano is officially happening. On May 16, 2026, combat sports history will be made—live on Netflix.
