Saint Louis freshman Mads Stistrup Petersen scored on a free kick in the 69th minute to give Saint Louis a crucial 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over George Washington Saturday night at Hermann Stadium.
With the victory, the Billikens improve to 8-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in A-10 play. George Washington dips to 6-6-2 overall and 2-4 in the league.
Petersen’s goal came at the 68:40 mark and was off a free kick as a result of a foul drawn by John Klein. Petersen took the shot straight on from roughly 23 yards and put it into the right-side netting, just out of the reach of the sprawling GW goalkeeper Justin Grady.
It was Petersen’s third goal of his career with all three goals coming this week. He scored twice in the Billikens’ victory over Blackburn on Tuesday.
The goal came after the Billikens began mounting pressure in the scoreless game up to that point. Just minutes earlier, Petersen chipped a pass into the box, but Grady was there to stop a header from CJ Coppola.
On the other end, Carlos Tofern was sharp for the Billikens, making four saves (three in the second half) for his second shutout of the season.
Saint Louis remains in second place in the A-10 standings, as first-place Duquesne defeated Davidson tonight, 2-1.
