Prime Video has officially recast the lead role in its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the God of War video game franchise. Dave Bautista will now portray Kratos, taking over from Ryan Hurst after the latter was forced to step aside due to a serious on-set injury.
The news, confirmed Thursday by multiple outlets including Variety and Deadline, comes after weeks of reports that the former WWE star and Guardians of the Galaxy actor was in talks for the physically demanding part. Bautista’s deal is now closed, and production is expected to resume in Vancouver this fall.
Hurst, known for his work on Sons of Anarchy and The Odyssey, was announced as Kratos in January. Filming began in February on a two-season order, with the seasons planned to shoot back-to-back. In late June, four months into production, Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt. The injury required surgery and a lengthy recovery that would have delayed filming until 2027. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, which are co-producing the series, opted to recast rather than halt the project for that long.
Several episodes had already been shot with Hurst. Those scenes will now be reshot with Bautista. Prep work is underway, with cameras expected to roll again in mid-October. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye, who helmed the first two episodes of the original shoot, is expected to return for the new version.
Bautista brings an imposing physical presence and proven action credentials to the role of the former Spartan warrior and God of War. The actor, who rose to fame as Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has also appeared in Dune: Part Two, Blade Runner 2049, and Glass Onion. He recently completed work on the Highlander remake, another physically intense fantasy project. His background as a professional wrestler gives him the stamina and screen presence the character demands.
The series, created and showrun by Ronald D. Moore, will adapt the 2018 God of War game in its first season. It follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey through the Norse realms to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ late wife, Faye. Callum Vinson remains in the role of Atreus. Other cast members include Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor.
The recasting marks a significant shift for a production that already faced scrutiny after an early first-look image of Hurst as Kratos circulated earlier this year. Bautista’s higher profile could help broaden the series’ appeal beyond the game’s dedicated fanbase while still delivering the gravitas the character requires.
Prime Video has not announced a release date. With two seasons already ordered and filming set to restart soon, the adaptation now has a clearer path forward after an unexpected interruption.
