FX has ordered Legends, a limited series that will reunite much of the original Sons of Anarchy ensemble more than a decade after the motorcycle-club drama concluded its seven-season run. The project, which will air on FX and stream on Hulu, takes an unconventional approach: the actors will portray fictionalized versions of themselves rather than their former characters.
The series was developed by Charlie Hunnam, who starred as Jax Teller in the original show. Hunnam will write, star in, and executive produce Legends. Jonathan Groff will serve as showrunner. Additional executive producers include Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. FX Productions and 20th Television will produce.
According to the official description, the story begins when the Sons of Anarchy cast gathers at a fan convention after more than ten years apart. “The line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”
Confirmed to return are Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. Additional casting will be announced later.
The premise has drawn comparisons to the 1999 film Galaxy Quest, in which actors from a canceled science-fiction series are drawn into a genuine crisis. Hunnam has previously stated that he would not reprise the role of Jax Teller, whose story ended with the 2014 series finale. Legends avoids that issue by placing the performers, not their characters, at the center of the narrative.
Kurt Sutter, who created Sons of Anarchy, is not involved in the new series. In a statement, Sutter said Hunnam sought his blessing during the development process and received it. Sutter added that the project has “nothing to do with the characters or the story” he originated.
Kim Coates, who played Tig Trager, praised Hunnam’s approach. “He could have tried to re-create Sons, but that’s not what this is,” Coates said. “It’s smart, it’s wild, it’s funny, it’s dangerous — and it has Charlie’s fingerprints all over it.”
Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, described the concept as “a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
Sons of Anarchy premiered in 2008 and became one of FX’s signature dramas. It later spawned the spinoff Mayans M.C., which ran from 2018 to 2023. No premiere date for Legends has been announced.
