GRAMMY-winning singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles has shared a new single, “Still Crying,” along with its accompanying music video. The track arrives as the latest preview of her upcoming album Good Grief, due August 28 via Epic Records.

Co-written with Aaron Dessner, “Still Crying” confronts the looping, stubborn nature of grief. “I was trying to wrap my arms around the redundancy and the stuckness of that feeling of, ‘How am I here again? Why am I still crying? I’m still in the same loop,’” Bareilles said of the song.
The music video, directed by Kimmy Gatewood (who directed much of the third season of Girls5eva), features Bareilles alongside her Girls5eva co-star John Lutz and other friends. Gatewood’s involvement continues a creative partnership that began on the Peacock series in which Bareilles co-stars.
“Still Crying” follows the album’s first single, “Home,” released in June. That track, inspired by a conversation between Stephen Colbert and Anderson Cooper about grief and loss, was described by SPIN as “a meditation on loss, connection and resilience.” Bareilles has called Good Grief her most personal work in years.
The 14-track album marks Bareilles’ seventh studio release and her first since 2019’s Grammy-winning Amidst the Chaos. Self-produced and recorded largely over six days at Dreamland Recording Studios in Woodstock, New York, the project features longtime collaborators including drummer Charley Drayton, guitarist Butterfly Boucher, keyboardist Misty Boyce, bassist Solomon Dorsey, multi-instrumentalist Rob Moose, and co-producer/engineer/mixer Jonathan Low. Additional sessions took place with Dessner at Long Pond Studios in the Hudson Valley, with Bella Blasko engineering and mixing. Guest contributors include Brandi Carlile, the late poet Andrea Gibson, Ingrid Michaelson, Joe Tippett, and Megan Falley.
The album’s title is deliberate. Much of the material grew out of Bareilles processing the loss of one of her closest friends, alongside broader reflections on the state of the world. The collection moves between intimate tributes, defiant anthems, and unexpected moments of lightness, held together by a through-line of hope.
A documentary, Sara Bareilles: Good Grief, directed by Josh Alexander and produced by Daniel J. Chalfen, captured the making of the record. The film premiered at the Tribeca Festival last month and offers an unfiltered look at Bareilles’ return to the studio with close friends after seven years.
Bareilles will support the album with the Good Grief Tour this fall, promoted by Live Nation. The run begins September 9–10 in Boston and includes stops in Washington, D.C., Toronto, New York (Radio City Music Hall), Philadelphia, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, Austin, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. St. Louis fans will get their night on October 2 at the Stifel Theatre.
The album, tour, and documentary cap a significant stretch for Bareilles. Her song “Salt Then Sour Then Sweet,” co-written with Brandi Carlile and Andrea Gibson, appears in the Peabody Award-winning documentary Come See Me in the Good Light (which she also executive produced). Both the song and film were shortlisted at the 98th Academy Awards. That track also lands on Good Grief.
