A highly anticipated rematch between the Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury turned physical and controversial on Wednesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, with the Mercury pulling out a 111-109 victory. The game featured a widely criticized play involving Caitlin Clark that has sparked significant fan outrage across social media.

Clark finished with 19 points and eight assists in limited action before exiting early in the third quarter with a back injury. The Fever led at times but couldn’t hold off a strong Mercury finish led by Kahleah Copper’s 28 points.

The flashpoint came in the second quarter. As Clark drove into the lane and fell to the floor after contact, Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas and others converged in a scramble for the loose ball. Video clearly shows Thomas pressing her fist into Clark’s neck/throat area while Clark was down, along with additional knee contact. No foul was called on the play, and it was not reviewed.

Fans erupted online, calling the sequence a dangerous cheap shot. Clips spread rapidly, with many questioning the officials’ decision not to intervene and the league’s overall protection of its superstar players. The physical tone contributed to a chippy fourth quarter filled with technical fouls and tension.

Clark appeared to shrug off the immediate incident but voiced frustration with a technical foul she received for clapping after a whistle. Fever head coach Stephanie White strongly criticized the officiating afterward, describing the contact as “egregious,” “utterly disrespectful,” and dangerous — particularly the fist to the throat.

This marks another chapter in ongoing discussions about physical play targeting Clark. The Fever showed fight despite the loss and the injury to their star, but the night will be remembered more for the controversy than the final score.

The WNBA continues to grow in popularity, but incidents like this fuel debates about player safety, officiating standards, and how the league handles its biggest draws.
