After an extended absence due to offseason heel surgery, Lars Nootbaar is nearing his return to the St. Louis Cardinals lineup, which could provide a significant boost to a team that has already exceeded expectations in the early stages of the 2026 season.
Nootbaar, who debuted with the Cardinals in 2021, now stands as the longest-tenured member of the active roster. With 527 games played in a St. Louis uniform, he has more experience than nearly all of his current teammates. He remains the only active Cardinal with postseason experience for the organization and the sole link to the era that included Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols.
Known for his strong plate discipline, promising power, and engaging personality, Nootbaar has long been a favorite among Cardinals supporters. His performance in the 2022 World Baseball Classic with Japan elevated his profile, and many anticipated multiple All-Star selections ahead. However, injuries have consistently interrupted his development. He appeared in 117 games in 2023 and 109 in 2024, and while he reached a career high of 135 games in 2025, lingering physical issues affected his overall production.
Following surgery to address Haglund’s deformities in both heels last October, Nootbaar began the 2026 season on the 60-day injured list. He was eligible for activation as of May 24 but is now targeting a return around June 1 after a successful rehab assignment that included a home run in his first at-bat at Low-A.
The Cardinals enter the final days of May with a record of 29-25 holding a tie for second place in the NL Central with the Reds and positioned as one of the more encouraging stories in the National League. Young talent has driven much of their success, particularly in the top portion of the lineup. However, the lower third of the order has struggled, creating a clear need for additional offensive production.
Nootbaar’s return addresses multiple areas. With Nathan Church sidelined by a shoulder injury and Victor Scott II facing offensive challenges, left field presents an immediate opportunity. The 28-year-old left-handed hitter is expected to slot into the middle of the order—likely fifth or sixth—where his on-base skills and power can help lengthen the lineup and provide balance.
Originally viewed as a potential trade candidate upon his recovery, Nootbaar now arrives at a moment when the Cardinals appear capable of contending in 2026. His veteran presence on a youthful roster could prove valuable, whether he helps sustain the current momentum or enhances his value ahead of future roster decisions. He is under team control through 2027.
For a player who has symbolized potential throughout much of his Cardinals tenure, this return presents an important opportunity to establish greater consistency and solidify his role. As the team pursues postseason aspirations, Nootbaar’s contributions in the outfield and lineup could be instrumental.
