Thunderbirds Pull Off Stunning Overtime Upset, Eliminate Charlotte to Advance in Calder Cup Playoffs

In a series that refused to follow the script, the sixth-seeded Springfield Thunderbirds delivered a playoff masterpiece on Saturday night, topping the third-seeded Charlotte Checkers 2-1 in overtime to claim a 2-1 victory in their Atlantic Division first-round series.

The dramatic finish at Bojangles Coliseum sent the visitors into the Atlantic Division semifinals, where they will open a best-of-five set against the top-seeded Providence Bruins on Friday night in Rhode Island.

For a team that entered the postseason as heavy underdogs — and was routed 8-1 in the series opener just three nights earlier — the Thunderbirds’ resilience was nothing short of remarkable. After storming back with a 5-2 win in Game 2 to force the decisive third contest, Springfield controlled its own destiny on the road and refused to let the heavily favored hosts dictate the narrative.

Charlotte carried the play for long stretches, outshooting Springfield 35-24 overall and 6-2 in the extra session. But goaltender Georgi Romanov stood tall with 34 saves, including several spectacular stops in overtime, and the Thunderbirds capitalized on a swift rush to end it.

With 5:10 remaining in the 4-on-4 overtime, Julien Gauthier finished a pretty tic-tac-toe play, burying a feed from Otto Stenberg past Charlotte netminder Cooper Black (22 saves) at the 14:50 mark. It was Gauthier’s second goal of the playoffs and the game-winner that silenced the crowd of 5,040 and ended Charlotte’s season.

Calle Rosén had tied the game for Springfield midway through the third period, deflecting home a Chris Wagner feed at 5:45 of the final frame. Tobias Björnfot scored the game’s first goal for Charlotte 5:58 into the opening period.

No power-play goals were scored despite a combined seven minor penalties, underscoring the tight-checking, low-event nature of a series that ultimately hinged on special teams avoidance and timely finishing.

The result marks the latest chapter in Springfield’s recent playoff pedigree. The Thunderbirds, who reached the Calder Cup Final as recently as 2022, have now dispatched a higher-seeded Atlantic Division opponent in the opening round for the second time in five years.

“We knew we had to play a full 60 — plus whatever overtime gave us — and that’s exactly what we did,” said Springfield head coach Drew Bannister after the game. “Romanov gave us a chance, our guys battled, and we found a way to get it done on the road. That’s playoff hockey.”

For Charlotte, the loss stings. The Checkers had dominated the regular-season series and looked every bit the division favorite after Game 1. But Springfield’s depth, goaltending, and opportunistic scoring proved too much in the end.

The Thunderbirds now shift their focus to Providence, a familiar and formidable foe that finished atop the Atlantic Division. The best-of-five Atlantic semifinals open Friday, May 1, at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center (7:05 p.m. ET), with Games 2 and 3 following on Sunday and Tuesday. Springfield will host Games 3 and, if necessary, Game 4 at the MassMutual Center.

For a sixth seed that was written off after an eight-goal thrashing in Game 1, the Thunderbirds have authored an unlikely first chapter. Now they get 48 hours to rest, regroup, and prepare for the next test against a Providence team that will be anything but welcoming.
