Saint Louis University has announced that celebrated writer, filmmaker, and producer James Gunn will deliver the keynote address at the university’s 2026 Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 16.

A proud St. Louis native and Saint Louis University alumnus, Gunn returns to his alma mater at the height of a remarkable career that has redefined blockbuster filmmaking and television storytelling. He is best known for directing and writing the massively successful Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, the upcoming 2025 feature Superman, and the Emmy-nominated HBO Max series Peacemaker, which he created. Gunn currently serves as co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, where he is guiding the future of one of entertainment’s most iconic brands.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Gunn graduated from St. Louis University High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Louis University. While on campus he contributed political cartoons to the student newspaper, The University News, an early sign of the sharp wit and creative voice that would later define his work. He went on to receive an MFA from Columbia University and began his career writing and directing cult-favorite films before breaking through with Marvel Studios.

Gunn’s journey from St. Louis classrooms to Hollywood soundstages embodies the kind of bold, imaginative leadership SLU has long sought to instill in its graduates. His films blend irreverent humor, heartfelt character work, and ambitious world-building—qualities that have earned him a global fan base and critical acclaim. The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy became one of the highest-grossing superhero franchises of all time, while Peacemaker proved that serialized storytelling in the DC universe could be both funny and deeply human. In 2025, Gunn’s Superman marked a highly anticipated reboot of the iconic character, further cementing his role as a visionary steward of beloved intellectual property.

As co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios since 2022, Gunn has taken on the challenge of unifying DC’s film, television, and animation efforts under a single creative vision—an endeavor that demands the same strategic thinking, passion for storytelling, and respect for legacy that SLU graduates are encouraged to carry into their own careers.

Commencement will bring together thousands of SLU students, families, and faculty at the conclusion of the 2025–2026 academic year. Gunn’s address is expected to blend reflections on his St. Louis upbringing, lessons learned at SLU, and forward-looking advice for the Class of 2026 as they step into a world that increasingly rewards bold imagination and ethical leadership.
