Northern Iowa didn’t just win on Friday afternoon at the MVC Tournament. They authored a statement.
In a performance that was equal parts surgical and suffocating, the sixth-seeded Panthers dismantled third-seeded Illinois State 74-52, advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2023 and etching another chapter in program lore. The victory also crowned head coach Ben Jacobson the winningest coach in MVC Tournament history. His 22nd postseason triumph in the league surpasses the mark of 21 set by former Creighton coach Dana Altman.
For a Panthers program that has spent recent years searching for its footing, this felt like a coronation of sorts. UNI improved to 21-12 overall — its highest win total since the 25-6 season of 2019-20 — and moved to 31-27 all-time in the MVC Tournament, including 13-13 in quarterfinal games and an encouraging 8-6 mark against Illinois State.
What made the result even more striking was the company it kept: this marked the first time in MVC Tournament history that the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 seeds all fell in the same quarterfinal round. Upset Thursday became upset Friday.
Redshirt junior Leon Bond II led the way with 19 points, including 11 after intermission when the Panthers turned a manageable lead into a rout. Bond, who struggled from the floor (3-of-12) in Thursday’s win over Evansville, found his rhythm early and never lost it.
Senior guard Trey Campbell added 12 points and, more importantly, cemented his place in UNI history. Campbell became the first Panther to amass 1,000 career points (1,353), 500 rebounds (503) and 300 assists (301). He now sits 12th on the school’s all-time scoring list, fourth in made 3-pointers (212) and third in steals (166).
Senior forward Ben Schwieger delivered a quietly excellent line — 11 points, game-high eight rebounds, three assists — while sophomore Will Hornseth chipped in nine points, five boards and a team-high six assists to keep the offense flowing.
The story of the game was simple: UNI never trailed and rarely allowed Illinois State to breathe.
The Panthers opened a 5-0 lead and never looked back. Illinois State managed a brief 6-0 spurt to trim an eight-point deficit to two, but UNI answered every push. By halftime the margin stood at 35-27, with the Redbirds limited to 36 percent shooting (9-of-25) and a dismal 2-of-12 from 3-point range.
The second half was decisive. Northern Iowa shot 62.5 percent from the field while holding Illinois State to 28.6 percent. Bond opened the period with a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 40-27. When Chase Walker picked up his fourth foul with 12:38 remaining and ISU trailing 46-34, the Panthers pounced with an 8-3 run that pushed the advantage to 54-37 with just over nine minutes left.
From there, it was academic. UNI owned the glass in the second half (15-12), dominated the paint (20-8), and outscored the Redbird bench 13-7.
For Illinois State (20-12), the afternoon was one to forget. The Redbirds saw their two-game winning streak snapped and endured their second-largest defeat of the season. Their 52 points were the second-fewest they’ve scored all year; they set season lows with 15 made field goals, three made 3-pointers and a .150 3-point percentage. For the first time in 2025-26, ISU trailed wire-to-wire.
Junior forward Chase Walker led the Redbirds with 11 points (on 2-of-7 shooting) and grabbed five rebounds to reach 400 for his career — his 21st double-figure scoring game of the season. Junior guard Johnny Kinziger added eight points, three assists (101 on the year) and matched a career high with four steals.
But the numbers told only part of the story. Illinois State never found rhythm, never generated easy looks and never mounted a second-half charge.
Northern Iowa, meanwhile, carried the momentum of three straight victories into Saturday’s semifinals. The Panthers played with purpose, precision and — perhaps most importantly — belief.
In a tournament defined by chaos, UNI looked very much like a team that intends to write its own ending.
