The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have claimed third baseman Bryan Ramos off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, bolstering their infield depth with a young, former top prospect in a low-risk, waiver-wire acquisition.
Baltimore had only recently acquired him themselves from the Chicago White Sox in a trade for cash considerations on February 1, 2026, following his DFA by Chicago on January 29 to clear space on the 40-man roster.
Ramos, a 23-year-old right-handed hitter and thrower born March 12, 2002, in Havana, Cuba, originally signed with the White Sox as an international free agent in July 2018. He made his Major League debut on May 4, 2024, against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium—an ironic twist now that he’s joining St. Louis. Across 36 career MLB games with Chicago over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Ramos has slashed .198/.244/.333 with 3 home runs, 6 doubles, 13 RBI, and a modest .577 OPS in 111 at-bats.
His minor-league track record shows more promise, with 80 career home runs in 560 games across the White Sox system. In 2025 at Triple-A Charlotte, he hit 16 homers in 371 at-bats while slashing .216/.309/.396 (OPS .705), adding 51 RBI, 60 runs, and 13 stolen bases in 431 plate appearances. Overall in the minors, he’s posted a .249/.336/.421 line with solid power potential for a corner infielder.
Defensively, Ramos has primarily played third base in the majors but offers versatility, having logged time at second base, first base, and even left field in the minors. He was ranked as the White Sox’s No. 3 prospect in both 2023 and 2024, and No. 9 in 2025, highlighting his status as one of Chicago’s better-positioned young talents before recent struggles at the plate limited his big-league impact.
With no minor-league options remaining, Ramos will need to compete for a spot on the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster during spring training or potentially pass through waivers again. The addition fills the open 40-man roster spot created by the recent trade of infielder Brendan Donovan to the Seattle Mariners, bringing the Cardinals’ 40-man roster to exactly 40. The team has assigned him uniform No. 29.
