The San Francisco Giants have bolstered their outfield defense with the signing of veteran center fielder Harrison Bader to a two-year, $20.5 million contract.

Bader, 31, comes off a career-best offensive campaign in 2025, where he split time between the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies. He posted a .277/.347/.449 slash line with 17 home runs, 54 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases across 146 games—setting personal highs in several categories. While his bat has historically been inconsistent (career .247/.313/.401), his elite glove remains his calling card. A 2021 Gold Glove winner with the St. Louis Cardinals, Bader leads all outfielders since 2018 with 76 Outs Above Average and brings plus speed (85th percentile sprint speed) and range that should thrive in Oracle Park’s spacious dimensions.

The Giants’ outfield ranked among the worst in MLB defensively in 2025, tying for last in Outs Above Average and struggling near the bottom in Defensive Runs Saved. Bader’s arrival provides an immediate upgrade, allowing the club to shift Jung Hoo Lee—who struggled in center after signing a big deal in 2023—from center field to a corner spot, likely right field, where his arm strength can play up better. This move stabilizes the unit, supports the pitching staff by covering more ground, and adds a baserunning threat to a team that ranked near the bottom in stolen bases last year.

Bader, originally a third-round pick by the Cardinals in 2015, will suit up for his seventh MLB team. He expressed enthusiasm about the fit, telling reporters the Giants were a “perfect fit” due to the opportunity for playing time, the talented roster—including familiar faces like Matt Chapman—and the chance to compete in the heated NL West rivalry against the Dodgers.

In a relatively conservative offseason for San Francisco, which has focused on lower-cost pitching additions like Tyler Mahle and Adrian Houser, the Bader signing stands out as a targeted move to prioritize defense and competitiveness. Pending his physical, Bader is poised to anchor center field and help the Giants push for a return to the postseason in 2026.
