On January 9, 2026, an arrest warrant was issued in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for Emmy Award-winning actor and director Timothy Busfield, 68, charging him with two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse.

The allegations involve two related boys (siblings, around 11 years old at the time of reporting) who appeared as child actors on the Fox series The Cleaning Lady, where Busfield directed episodes from late 2022 to 2025. According to the police affidavit, one boy reported that Busfield touched his “private areas” (described as “poop” and “pee” area over clothing) multiple times, starting when he was 7 years old (three or four incidents) and recurring when he was 8 (five or six more times), often in a bedroom on set.

The investigation began in November 2024 after a doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital reported concerns about possible grooming. Initially, when police spoke to the family, the boys disclosed only non-sexual tickling, and the case did not meet criteria for further action at that time.

In early October 2025, the boys’ mother reported to Child Protective Services and filed a police report stating that both children had disclosed sexual abuse by Busfield from around November 2022 to spring 2024. One boy told a therapist about nightmares of Busfield touching him, describing shame and fear of speaking up because Busfield was the director. The child has since been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. Forensic interviews confirmed both boys’ accounts of inappropriate touching over clothing.

Busfield referred to himself as “Uncle Tim” to the boys, which police described as potential grooming behavior, including inviting the family to off-set events and fostering closeness. In a November 2025 phone interview with police, Busfield acknowledged it was “highly likely” he tickled the boys, calling the set “playful,” but denied anything inappropriate. He suggested the allegations stemmed from retaliation by the mother after her sons were not brought back for the show’s final season.

Warner Bros. Television conducted an internal investigation in 2025 following an anonymous SAG-AFTRA complaint about tickling and caressing young boys (including a separate kissing incident in a trailer), but reportedly found the claims unsubstantiated and delayed providing records to authorities.

Busfield, known for his Emmy-winning role in Thirtysomething, his part as Danny Concannon on The West Wing, and films like Field of Dreams, has faced prior sexual misconduct allegations in 1994 and 2012, none resulting in charges. He is married to actress Melissa Gilbert since 2013.

As of January 10, 2026, Busfield is not in custody, per Albuquerque police. His representatives have not commented. This remains an active case, and all parties are presumed innocent until proven otherwise in court. The allegations highlight serious concerns about child safety on film sets.
