The St. Louis Cardinals have hired Jacob Buffa as their new senior director of international scouting. The announcement marks another strategic addition to the front office under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, who is methodically reshaping the organization’s scouting and player development infrastructure ahead of the 2026 season.
Buffa, a St. Louis (Chesterfield) native, brings seven years of high-level experience from the Houston Astros, where he most recently served as senior director of player development and performance science. His departure from Houston is part of a broader winter exodus for the Astros, which has seen several key figures leave amid their own organizational transitions. For the Cardinals, Buffa’s hire represents not just an acquisition of talent but a homecoming—Buffa graduated from nearby Missouri State University and co-founded a baseball performance facility in the St. Louis area before embarking on his professional journey in Houston.
Buffa’s tenure with the Astros was defined by innovation and rapid ascent. Joining the organization in January 2019 as a development coach, he quickly made his mark by establishing the team’s inaugural performance science department. By 2022, he had been promoted to director of performance science, where he spearheaded initiatives in biomechanics, sports sciences, and holistic player development. In his elevated role as farm director, Buffa oversaw the integration of data-driven methodologies that contributed to the Astros’ sustained success in nurturing talent through their minor league system.
“Jacob’s work in Houston has been instrumental in blending cutting-edge science with on-field results,” noted an Astros source. His expertise in these areas aligns seamlessly with Bloom’s vision for the Cardinals, who have prioritized analytical depth and scouting efficiency since his arrival.
In his new position, Buffa will report directly to assistant general manager of international scouting Moisés Rodriguez, focusing on identifying and evaluating global talent to bolster the Cardinals’ farm system. This role is crucial as St. Louis embarks on a moderate rebuild, emphasizing international pipelines to supplement domestic drafts and trades.
