The St. Louis Cardinals have hired Joe Douglas, a seasoned analytics mind from the Pittsburgh Pirates’ front office, as their Director of Pro Acquisition. The announcement underscores the team’s commitment to enhancing its scouting and player evaluation infrastructure amid a moderate rebuild.
Douglas, who spent the past eight years with the Pirates, brings a wealth of experience in player analysis and valuation to Busch Stadium. Most recently serving as the Head of Player Analysis in Pittsburgh, Douglas was instrumental in blending quantitative insights with scouting reports to inform acquisition strategies. His tenure with the Pirates began in 2017 as a quantitative analyst, where he quickly ascended to roles such as Senior Quantitative Analyst and Assistant Director of Professional Player Valuation by 2021. A Pittsburgh native and 2013 graduate of Robert Morris University with a degree in applied mathematics and actuarial science, Douglas has long been regarded as a rising star in baseball operations, having pursued his passion for the game from collegiate analytics circles to the major leagues.
In his new role with the Cardinals, Douglas will oversee the professional scouting department, collaborating closely with assistant general manager and scouting director Randy Flores. He will lead efforts to identify and acquire talent through trades, free agency, and waivers, ensuring that pro scouts— all seven of whom were retained on one-year deals—provide actionable intelligence for the front office. This position is pivotal as the Cardinals aim to infuse their roster with cost-effective, high-upside players, aligning with Bloom’s philosophy of data-driven decision-making honed during his time with the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox.
As the offseason unfolds, the Cardinals are expected to fill additional vacancies, including a director of hitting, new assistant coaches, and a head trainer.
