Yadier Molina, the legendary catcher who anchored the St. Louis Cardinals for 19 seasons, is inching closer to a permanent home in the team’s dugout. In an exclusive interview with Puerto Rican outlet El Vocero, Molina revealed ongoing discussions with the Cardinals about joining the coaching staff full-time starting in 2026, where he would support manager Oliver Marmol.

“Right now we’re in contact with St. Louis to become a coach for the Cardinals and help Marmol. He’s still the manager, but I’d be there alongside him. Nothing’s concrete yet, but we’re working on it,” Molina told El Vocero. The 43-year-old didn’t specify an exact role—whether as bench coach, catching instructor, or something more—but emphasized his desire to collaborate closely with Marmol, the young skipper he has long praised for his baseball acumen.

This isn’t Molina’s first flirtation with a post-playing career in St. Louis. Just two months ago, in August 2025, he made a nostalgic cameo as a temporary coach during a series against the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium. Donning the Cardinals uniform once more, Molina worked with the pitching staff and catchers, drawing thunderous ovations from fans who still chant “Yadi! Yadi!” in his honor. That stint, which Marmol described as a “breath of fresh air,” reignited speculation about Molina’s future in the organization.

Molina’s bond with the Cardinals runs deep. Drafted in 2002, he debuted in 2004 and quickly became the franchise’s ironclad backstop, earning 10 Gold Gloves, four Platinum Gloves, and two World Series rings (2006 and 2011). His defensive wizardry, game-calling prowess, and unflappable demeanor made him a cornerstone of St. Louis’ golden era under managers Tony La Russa and Mike Matheny. Even in retirement since 2022, Molina has remained a Cardinals ambassador.

The timing feels right for Molina. He recently committed to managing Puerto Rico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, a role that aligns with his passion for international play. But after that, he has hinted at a desire to dive headfirst into MLB coaching—ideally with the Cardinals. “I feel like the time is right to get back into the game,” Molina said during his August visit, adding that he envisions himself in a dugout by 2026, potentially as a manager somewhere down the line. While his heart is set on St. Louis, he’s open to opportunities elsewhere if the right fit arises.

Marmol, entering his third full season as Cardinals manager, has welcomed the idea enthusiastically. “Yadi’s presence is invaluable,” Marmol told reporters after Molina’s August stint. “His experience, his voice—it’s like having a second manager in the best way possible.” The Cardinals, who finished 78-84 in 2025 and missed the playoffs for a third straight year, could certainly use Molina’s steadying influence amid a roster in transition.

As negotiations continue, the Cardinal Nation watches closely. For Molina, this could mark the next chapter in a Hall of Fame career—one where he transitions from player to teacher, passing the torch to the next generation of Cardinals catchers and players.
