Once again, Dr. Zhivegas: Prince Tribute, brings magic to St. Louis venue, The Old Rock House on Friday night.
“1999” kicked off the evening, prompting a full dance floor in a matter of seconds. Front man Frankie Muriel donned a sleek, purple knee-length jacket.
A string of hits from the “Purple Rain” Era followed: “Little Red Corvette” ; “Raspberry Beret” ; “Let’s Go Crazy” ; “When Doves Cry”, to name a few.
Frankie Muriel and company also acknowledged the 1991 album with “Diamonds and Pearls” and “Cream”. Slipped into the mix- “Nothing Compares 2 U”, the 90’s gem written by Prince for Sinead O’Connor.
For me personally – the experience was emotional on multiple levels, as the band is currently wrapping up 30 years of rocking on the “Last Dance with Dr. Z” tour. The nostalgia of Prince; my younger days of dancing all night with Dr. Zhivegas on stage.
Frankie and company, brings it together like a perfectly wrapped bow. He and co-vocalist Denise Atty balance out perfectly. All strings were on point between Cubby, Dee Dee and Ethan – who neatly wrapped up the night with “Purple Rain” ‘s capturing guitar-solo.
Paul Chickey is a machine behind the kit, carrying those Prince beats we all know and love.
Chris Deusinger killed every note on alto/soprano saxophone, after a long hiatus due to illness. A large group of fans sported sashes that read “I’m here for the Sax”.
Towards the end of a straight-through 2 hour set, purple confetti rained inside the venue. No one left without a smile, or at least a good night of dancing in the books. After following the band for a better of my last 20 years, I would like to use this opportunity to say, thank you Dr. Zhivegas for many unforgettable nights.
