Milwaukee Brewers Bolster Catching Depth with Danny Jansen Acquisition

On July 28, 2025, the Milwaukee Brewers made a strategic move to strengthen their roster ahead of the MLB trade deadline, acquiring catcher Danny Jansen from the Tampa Bay Rays. The trade, first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, sees the Brewers sending infield prospect Jadher Areinamo to Tampa Bay, along with the Rays including cash to offset part of Jansen’s $8.5 million salary for 2025.

Jansen, a 30-year-old Appleton West High School alumnus, brings a mix of offensive pop and defensive reliability to Milwaukee. Despite a .204 batting average this season, he has hit 11 home runs and posted a .314 on-base percentage with an .820 OPS against left-handed pitchers. His recent hot streak, with a .900-plus OPS in July, adds a valuable right-handed bat to the Brewers’ lineup, particularly as starting catcher William Contreras battles a fractured finger that has hampered his production (.625 OPS since June 1). Jansen’s acquisition provides flexibility, allowing Contreras more rest or potentially avoiding season-ending surgery.

Defensively, Jansen is an above-average pitch blocker, though his framing metrics have dipped in recent years. Milwaukee’s track record of improving catcher defense could help Jansen rebound in this area. The trade likely displaces backup Eric Haase, whose .229/.289/.357 slash line pales in comparison. The Rays, in turn, are reportedly pursuing Miami’s Nick Fortes to fill Jansen’s role.

This move addresses a key depth need for the Brewers, who sit atop the National League with a 62-43 record, tied with the Chicago Cubs. By adding Jansen, Milwaukee enhances its playoff push while navigating injuries to key players like Contreras and Rhys Hoskins. The cost of Areinamo, a promising 21-year-old with an .818 OPS in High-A, reflects the premium on catching talent, but the Brewers’ infield depth made him expendable.

As the trade deadline nears, Jansen’s addition signals Milwaukee’s intent to compete in a tight NL Central race. Fans in Wisconsin will welcome the hometown hero, hoping his bat and glove provide the edge needed for a deep postseason run.
