The Gateway Grizzlies kicked off their Sunday night matchup against the Lake Erie Crushers with a burst of energy, stringing together four consecutive singles to jump out to a 2-0 lead at Arsenal BG Ballpark. However, despite a strong pitching performance, the Grizzlies couldn’t hold on, falling 3-2 after late home runs by the Crushers. The loss pushed Gateway back to second place in the Frontier League West Division standings and marked their second straight one-run defeat in the weekend series.
The game started promisingly for the Grizzlies. Gabe Holt sparked the rally with an infield single, followed by Victor Castillo’s first of three hits on the night. A well-executed hit-and-run saw Jose Alvarez drive in a run with a single to right-center, and Dale Thomas immediately followed with an RBI single to left, putting Gateway up 2-0 before the Crushers could settle in.
On the mound, Lukas Veinbergs was dominant for much of the game. The Grizzlies’ starter struck out five and kept the Crushers’ bats silent through five and two-thirds innings, at one point retiring 10 batters in a row. But the tide turned in the sixth. With two outs, Alfredo Gonzalez singled, and Jarrod Watkins capitalized with a two-run homer on a two-strike pitch, tying the game at 2-2.
The decisive blow came in the seventh when Francis Peguero took the mound. Jaidan Quinn greeted him with a leadoff solo home run to left, giving the Crushers a 3-2 edge that would hold as the final score. Despite their early offensive spark, the Grizzlies struggled to generate chances after the first inning, managing just four baserunners over the final eight frames.
The loss stings, but the Grizzlies have a chance to regroup. After an off day on Monday, they’ll wrap up their nine-game homestand with a three-game series against the Joliet Slammers starting Tuesday, July 8, at Arsenal BG Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
