Major League Baseball has announced that Springfield Cardinals infielder JJ Wetherholt will represent the National League in the 2025 Futures Game. The 26th annual showcase of baseball’s brightest prospects is set for Saturday, July 12th, at 4:00 PM (ET) at Truist Park in Atlanta.
Wetherholt, selected seventh overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2024 MLB Draft, has been a standout in his first full season with Double-A Springfield. Through 57 games in the Texas League, the top prospect has posted an impressive .305/.430/.453 slash line, contributing significantly to the Cardinals’ First Half North Division Championship. His highlight reel includes a walk-off single against the Tulsa Drillers on June 12 at Hammons Field and a scorching seven-game hit streak in April, where he batted .533 from April 9–17. Wetherholt’s defensive prowess in the infield has also turned heads, cementing his status as a rising star.
This selection marks the ninth consecutive year that a Springfield Cardinal has earned a spot in the Futures Game, a streak dating back to 2016. Of the 11 Springfield players previously honored, nine have reached the Major Leagues, while the remaining two—Quinn Mathews and Tink Hence—remain in the Cardinals’ system as Top-30 Prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. Wetherholt’s inclusion in the 2025 roster underscores both his individual talent and the Springfield Cardinals’ reputation for developing elite prospects.
