In a thrilling announcement, Frontiers Music Srl has revealed the signing of legendary English rock supergroup ASIA, marking the dawn of an exhilarating new era for the band. 2024, the Year of the Dragon, has brought with it a powerful resurgence, as ASIA unveils a fresh lineup poised to carry forward its iconic legacy.
A Stellar New Lineup
Leading the charge is founding member, songwriter, producer, and keyboardist Geoff Downes, joined by acclaimed drummer Virgil Donati, virtuoso guitarist John Mitchell, and the stunning vocal newcomer and bassist Harry Whitley. This dynamic quartet promises to breathe new life into ASIA’s celebrated sound, ushering in a creative renaissance for the band.
Downes shared his enthusiasm: “ASIA is thrilled to have recently signed a new deal with Frontiers Music Srl. Having been loyally supported by the label throughout the ASIA reunion period from 2005-2015, we are now entering an exciting new chapter in the band’s 45-year history with a sequence of live albums, DVDs, and a brand new studio album scheduled for a 2026 release. It’s very much a homecoming for the band, and so we are greatly looking forward to a long and fruitful partnership with them in the future. Watch this space!”

A Tribute That Sparked Renewal
The seeds of this new chapter were sown in the summer of 2023, when Downes organized a memorial concert to honor the life and legacy of his late friend and ASIA co-founder, John Wetton. During the event, Downes invited John Mitchell, a rock veteran who had previously collaborated with both Wetton and Downes in ICON and Wetton’s solo band, to join him on stage as lead guitarist. The duo was complemented by Harry Whitley, a vocal talent discovered by Downes whose striking resemblance to Wetton’s voice left audiences in awe.
ASIA’s Storied Legacy
Formed in 1982 by Wetton, Downes, Carl Palmer, and Steve Howe, ASIA quickly became a global phenomenon. Their self-titled debut album topped charts worldwide, becoming the biggest-selling album of 1982. Hits like “Heat of the Moment,” “Only Time Will Tell,” and “Sole Survivor” defined a generation, dominating airwaves and cementing ASIA’s place in rock history.
The band followed up with the multi-million-selling Alpha in 1983 and Astra in 1986, completing a trio of MTV-era classics. Over the years, ASIA welcomed luminaries like Greg Lake for a historic Japanese tour, which included a groundbreaking intercontinental simulcast from the Budokan. After a reunion in 2006, the original members released several albums until Wetton’s passing in 2017. Since then, Downes and Palmer have toured with various collaborators, including Sam Coulson, Billy Sherwood, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, and Steve Howe.
A New Path Forward
With Palmer now focused on his passion project, Return of Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Howe leading progressive rock titans YES, Downes made the bold decision to forge a new path for ASIA. Recruiting Mitchell, Whitley, and the exceptional Virgil Donati—who previously played with Wetton in UK—Downes has assembled a lineup ready to take ASIA’s music to new heights.
